Key Enabling Technologies for Smart Factory in Automotive Industry: Status and Applications
What technologies are essential for an Automotive Smart Factory in the future?

  • The objective of this paper is to introduce technology levels to achieve Smart Factory (SF) advancement in the automotive industry.
  • Past and current research on Cellular Manufacturing Systems (CMS) which is a future production platform for automotive SF is reviewed.
  • Digital twins, additive manufacturing, AI-based monitoring & inspection, human-robot collaboration, and advanced supply chain & logistics are selected as five essential technologies to implement the automotive SF. Also, relevant research on these technologies for automotive SF is organized and reviewed according to the roles and relationships within CMS.
  • Lastly, we define and propose a five-level framework for an automotive SF based on the essential key technologies. Details about the framework are described with necessary techniques and application cases comprehensively.
