Vietnam Health System Strengthening Project

There will be a meeting regarding the project about strengthening the Vietnam Health System, which is a collaborative project between the Ministry of Health in Vietnam and Seoul National University. It will take place at the University of Medicine and Pharmacy in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam on July 10-11. During this meeting, the professors from Hanoi Medical University, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, as well as the Seoul National University professors, which includes the medical, public health, nursing and dental school departments, staffs from JWLEE Center for Global Medicine will discuss about the baseline study plan.

 

Georgetown Law School: International Health Seminar

Dr. Jong-Koo Lee, the director of JW Lee Center for Global Medicine, will participate in a seminar entitled "Infectious Diseases and Global Health Law" at Georgetown Law School from June 22nd to 26th 2015. This seminar covers information regarding law around infectious diseases and provides information on international health security framework. With the progress of globalization, common interests between countries include the prevention of and response to emerging infections. Due to the proliferation of MERS, Korea shows heightened interest in surrounding epidemics. In addition, countries that are classified as in medical fragile states need to be seriously concerned about the role of the state during epidemics and it is necessary to establish epidemic prevention programs based on past successful interventions. On June 26th, Dr. Jong-Koo Lee will cover the topic of "MERS in Korea: Reflections on Continuing Infectious Disease Outbreaks in a Globalized World" with Professors Gostin, Lucey, and Professor Susan Kim. After the presentation, they will conduct panel discussions. Furthermore, during the session, Korea's interventions towards the emergence of MERS, the threat posed by weak domestic legislation, the response to infectious diseases, and the implementation of preventive measures will be discussed.
 

Dr. Lee Jongwook Fellowship Program Opening Ceremony

The opening ceremony for the Dr. Lee Jongwook Fellowship Program was held at the Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH) on June 16th, 2015. The Dr. Lee Jong-wook Fellowship Program was started in 2007 to follow the late Dr. Lee’s footsteps in the fostering and development of qualified healthcare personnel worldwide. The program seeks to reify Dr. Lee’s vision by inviting healthcare personnel from developing countries and providing them with relevant healthcare training at leading medical centers in the Republic of Korea. This year, 30 fellows from Myanmar, Sri Lanka, Cambodia, Laos, Uzbekistan, Tanzania, Ghana, Mozambique, Kyrgyzstan, and Ethiopia were invited as participants; among them, eight fellows from Asia region will be trained at JW LEE Center for Global Medicine for 10 weeks from June 29th. KOFIH Secretary General Won-seok Sir provided encouragement to the fellows by wishing them a fruitful experience through the program in his opening remarks. In response, a representative member of the fellows thanked KOFIH, as well as all the attendees of the ceremony.

 

Global Health Program in Ethiopia

A special lecture “Global Health Program in Ethiopia”, was organized by the Seoul National University Children Hospital, hold on Thursday, May 28 at the Seoul National University Hospital. Mr.Kora Tushune, Vice President of Jimma University and Dr.Hailemariam Segni, Head of Medical School and Health Officers of Jimma University gave a speech on healthcare system in Ethiopia, experience of collaboration with Korea Foundation for International Healthcare (KOFIH). Next, Dr.Taehoon Kim, Country Office Representative of KOFIH, who shared the experience of Global Health starting on South Sudan to Ethiopia now, presented about health system strengthening in Ethiopia. After it was finished, Professor Woong-han Kim, CGM Hospital Service Strengthening Unit, consulted on the medical team capacity of Jimma University for “Hospital Construction Project for Congenital Cardiac Surgery in Ethiopia”, and built a relationship for continuous work.
